Open book decompositions in dimension 4 and beyond

  • Open book decompositions are ubiquitous in dimension three and in dimensions greater than four their existence is equivalent to the vanishing of the asymmetric signature. In dimension four, it is not known whether the vanishing of the asymmetric signature is sufficient for the existence of an open book decomposition. This talk will introduce open book decompositions and discuss what is known and isn't known about them especially in dimension four.
